"Frosty Reedmace"
by John Bebbington FRPS
|
Internationally famous as a haven for birdwatchers in
particular, Somerset Wildlife Trust’s main site on the Peat Moors
covers more than 100 hectares.
Restored peat diggings, three miles north-west of Glastonbury have been
transformed into a network of open water, reed bed and the largest
surviving fragment of lowland acid mire in the South-West.

"Siblings"
|
The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is a large cat native to Africa and
central Iran. It is the fastest land animal, estimated to be capable of
running at 80 to 128 km/h (50 to 80 mph) with the fastest reliably
recorded speeds being 93 and 98 km/h (58 and 61 mph), and as such has
several adaptations for speed, including a light build, long thin legs
and a long tail.
It
typically reaches 67 to 94 cm (26 to 37 in) at the shoulder, and the
head-and-body length is between 1.1 and 1.5 m (3 ft 7 in and 4 ft 11
in). Adults weigh between 21 and 72 kg (46 and 159 lb). Its head is
small and rounded, with a short snout and black tear-like facial
streaks. The coat is typically tawny to creamy white or pale buff and
is mostly covered with evenly spaced, solid black spots.

"Fish Eagle"
|
The African fish eagle is a large bird. The female, at 3.2 to 3.6 kg
(7.1 to7.9 lb) is larger than the male, at 2.0 to 2.5 kg (4.4 to 5.5
lb). This is typical sexual dimorphism in birds of prey. Males usually
have wingspans around 2.0 m (6.6 ft), while females have wingspans of
2.4 m (7.9 ft). The body length is 63 to 75 cm (25 to 29.5 in).
The adult is very distinctive in appearance with a mostly brown body
with a white head like the bald eagle and large, powerful, black wings.
The head, breast, and tail of African fish eagles are snow white, with
the exception of the featherless face, which is yellow. The eyes are
dark brown in colour. The hook-shaped beak, ideal for a carnivorous
lifestyle, is yellow with a black tip. The plumage of the juvenile is
brown, and the eyes are paler than the adult's. The feet have rough
soles and are equipped with powerful talons to enable the eagle to
grasp slippery aquatic prey.
While this species mainly subsists
on fish, it is opportunistic and may take a wider variety of prey such
as waterbirds. Its distinctive cry is, for many, evocative of the
spirit or essence of Africa. The call, shriller when uttered by males,
is a weee-ah, hyo-hyo or a heee-ah, heeah-heeah.

"Conwy Sunset"
|
The
River Conwy is in north Wales. From its source to its discharge in
Conwy Bay it is a little over 27 miles (43 km) long. "Conwy" is
sometimes Anglicized as "Conway".
"This photo just
goes to show it pays to have a camera with you. We had been visiting
friends in Conwy and as we crossed the bridge over the river I saw the
start of this sunset. So I parked the car, walked a few yards to the
river bank and waited for a few minutes for the sun to dip behind the
hill as it was too bright to shoot into the sunset. By moving a few
yards left to position the boat in the reflection, this was the result.
Back in the car and on the way home five minutes later!"

"Fairy Glen"
|
The Fairy Glen is a
secluded and enchanting gorge on the river Conwy. A favourite with
artists and photographers alike.
Located only a short distance from Beaver bridge on the outskirts of
Betws y Coed, a combination of rapids and cascades on the Conwy river
that are chanelled into a narrow ravine. Wooded banks and rock walls
clothed with vegetation add to the charm.

"Munro of Slioch"
|
Slioch
is a mountain in the Scottish Highlands situated in Wester Ross, eight
kilometres north of the village of Kinlochewe. Slioch reaches a height
of 981 metres (3218 feet) and towers above the south east end of Loch
Maree to give one of the best known and most photographed sights (from
the A832 road) in the Highlands. VisitScotland, the Scottish national
tourist agency, has used video footage of Slioch in its television
advertisements.

"Grey Langur"
|
Grey langurs, also
called Hanuman langurs or Hanuman monkeys, are Old World monkeys native
to the Indian subcontinent constituting the genus Semnopithecus.
Traditionally only one species Semnopithecus entellus was recognized,
but since about 2001, additional species have been recognized. The
taxonomy has been in flux, but currently eight species are recognized.
Grey langurs are fairly terrestrial, inhabiting forest, open lightly
wooded habitats, and urban areas on the Indian subcontinent. Most
species are found at low to moderate altitudes, but the Nepal grey
langur and Kashmir grey langur occur up to 4,000 m (13,000 ft) in the
Himalayas.

"Evening on the River"
|
Taken from the road
bridge towards the estuary of the Mengkabong River, Sabah in Borneo.
Although many people are now living in urban and suburban areas, they
maintain close ties with their relatives in the villages (kampung).
Often, during public holidays and festivals, you can see the long
exodus of people going back to their village. In Malay, it is called
Balik Kampung.
It is a sentiment shared by the Kadazans and local tribes, and the
Chinese people. Life in the rural village brings back many fond
memories for a lot of my friends. Especially the kampung way of life,
without the stress of city life, where you can hear birds singing,
enjoy the sunset, where time is measured differently.

"Red Squirrel"
|
The red squirrel
(Sciurus vulgaris) is a species of tree squirrel in the genus Sciurus
common throughout Europe and Asia. The red squirrel is an arboreal,
primarily herbivorous rodent.
In Great Britain, Ireland, and in Italy numbers have decreased
drastically in recent years. This decline is associated with the
introduction by humans of the eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus
carolinensis) from North America.
However, the population in Scotland is stabilising due to conservation
efforts, awareness and the increasing population of the pine marten, a
European predator that selectively controls grey squirrels.
